Plenty of Treasure Valley residents have the same itch. They love the mountains, the rivers, and the trailheads. They just want more of them, and a smaller town to come home to. That’s usually what starts a conversation about moving from Boise to Bozeman, Montana. That relocation allows you to trade Boise’s foothills for the Bridgers and the Gallatin Range, puts two national park entrances inside a 90-minute drive, and does so in a city of 59,000 people instead of 238,000.

It is an appealing move. It is also an expensive one, and a mountain-pass one. Both your budget and your calendar deserve a look before you pack. Here is what Boise households should know.

How Far Is Bozeman from Boise? Routes, Mileage and Drive Time

Suburbs of Bozeman, Montana in an aerial view

Bozeman sits roughly 475 to 500 highway miles northeast of Boise. That is about eight to nine hours of driving without stops. Two routes dominate.

The interstate route (I-84, I-86, I-15, I-90). You head east past Twin Falls and Pocatello, then north on I-15 through Idaho Falls and over Monida Pass into Montana. At Butte, you pick up I-90 eastbound. It is longer on the map, but it is almost entirely a four-lane divided highway with services at regular intervals. Most moving trucks take it.

The Yellowstone route (US-20, US-191). From Idaho Falls, you head northeast to West Yellowstone. From there you go north through the Gallatin Canyon, past Big Sky and into Bozeman. It is shorter and prettier. It is also two-lane for long stretches, with limited passing and a poor record in winter or in a large truck.

For a household move, plan the interstate route. Save the canyon drive for after you have unpacked.

Cost of Living: Bozeman vs. Boise

Bozeman is not a cheap city anymore, so the sticker shock is smaller than it once was. It is still real, though, and it lands almost entirely in housing.

Housing Is the Whole Story

Census figures put the median value of an owner-occupied home in Bozeman at about $687,900. In Boise it is roughly $484,800. Median gross rent runs about $1,717 in Bozeman versus $1,446 in Boise.

Zoom out to the county level and the gap widens. The 2026 Gallatin Valley housing report pegged the Gallatin County median home price at roughly $800,000. Ada County’s median single-family sales price sat near $575,900 in the spring of 2026, according to Boise Regional REALTORS®.

Incomes do not close that gap. Median household income is about $85,747 in Bozeman and $83,904 in Boise. Those are nearly identical earnings against a much higher housing cost.

The workaround is the one locals use. Look outward. Belgrade’s median sits closer to $600,000. Three Forks and Livingston are lower still, with a commute that will feel familiar to anyone who has driven Meridian to downtown at 7:30 a.m.

Taxes Cut Both Ways

Montana has no statewide sales tax. That is a permanent discount on everything you buy, including groceries, appliances and furniture for the new place. In exchange, income tax is higher at the top. Montana uses a two-bracket structure of 4.70% and 5.65%, while Idaho charges a flat 5.30% plus a 6% sales tax. Montana’s effective property tax rate on owner-occupied housing is about 0.61%, above Idaho’s 0.50%. It also applies to a higher home value.

Run your own numbers. Households that spend heavily and earn moderately tend to come out ahead in Montana. High earners on a modest budget often do not.

Yellowstone, Big Sky and a Ski Hill 20 Minutes from Downtown

This is the draw, and it is not overstated. Bozeman is about 90 miles from Yellowstone’s north entrance at Gardiner, and about the same from the west entrance at West Yellowstone. Either one is roughly 90 minutes, and longer in winter. Big Sky Resort is 45 miles south through the Gallatin Canyon. Bridger Bowl is about 20 minutes north of downtown. That is the community-owned hill locals actually ski on weekday mornings.

The snow that makes all of it work is the same snow you will be shoveling. Bozeman averages roughly 91 inches a year. Boise averages about 18.

A College Town with an Airport Attached

Montana State University enrolled a record 17,165 students in fall 2025. It anchors the local economy alongside a tech and outdoor-products sector that grew up around it. Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport served more than 2.8 million passengers in 2025, making it Montana’s busiest. That matters more than you would expect when your family is still in Idaho.

The flip side is growth. Bozeman added 9.7% to its population between 2020 and 2025. Traffic, school capacity and housing supply are all live local issues.

Timing Your Move: Winter Driving Is the Real Variable

Long straight road leads through the woods of northern Wyoming outside Yellowstone.

A Boise to Bozeman move crosses high ground. Monida Pass on I-15 tops out at 6,870 feet at the Idaho and Montana line, and it closes for wind and snow most winters. Homestake Pass sits east of Butte on I-90. Bozeman Pass, 5,702 feet and 13 miles east of town, closes often enough that locals check it before committing to a drive.

What that means for scheduling:

  • May through October is the easy window. Passes are clear, and you are not gambling a delivery date on a storm.
  • November through April is doable but needs slack. Build a flexible delivery window into your contract. Check Montana 511 and Idaho 511 the day before and the morning of.
  • Peak-season pricing runs May to September. If your dates are flexible, a late-April or October move often costs less and still avoids the worst weather.

If you are driving behind the truck, carry chains and a full tank leaving Idaho Falls. Bring enough water and warm layers to sit out a two-hour closure.

Boise Long-Distance Movers Who Know the Route

An interstate move is not just a bigger local move. It involves weight-based pricing, a delivery window rather than a delivery time, and interstate valuation coverage. On this corridor, it also involves a driver who has crossed Monida in February.

Peasley Moving & Storage has handled long-distance relocations out of the Treasure Valley for more than 130 years. We work as an agent for Allied Van Lines, which is what makes a single-truck, single-crew move to Gallatin County practical. Our interstate moving and long-distance moving teams handle packing, crating and loading.

Our Boise storage facility also covers a common Bozeman scenario: The need to store items in between selling your old home and moving into your new one. Storage-in-transit bridges that gap without a second full move. Our guide to storage options when moving out of Idaho explains how it works.

Ask any Boise to Montana movers you are considering for a written estimate and their USDOT number. Ask how they handle a weather delay at the pass. The answers separate the crews that run this corridor from the ones that do not.

Your Boise to Bozeman Checklist

  • Get estimates 8 to 12 weeks out. Start sooner for a summer move.
  • Declutter before you pay to move it. Interstate moves price by weight, so this is real money. Our pre-move decluttering plan is built for exactly this.
  • Start your Montana driver license within 60 days of establishing residency, per the Montana Motor Vehicle Division. It has to be done in person, by appointment.
  • Title and register your vehicles within 60 days as well. MVD handles this through your county treasurer’s office.
  • Line up utilities and internet early. New-construction addresses in Belgrade and north Bozeman can carry lead times.
  • Register for school by the district’s deadline. Confirm bus service if you land outside city limits

Moving from Boise to Bozeman means paying more for housing and shoveling five times the snow. In exchange, you get two national park entrances, world-class skiing and a smaller town.
